Dialogue is more than talking .....

Dialogue is more than communication ....

Dialogue is more than discussion ....

Dialogue is a creative process involving the utilisation of complementary competences, generating new meaning and content.

Communication based on the principles of dialogue is a pre-requisite for a learning culture and a learning climate. Without creative dialogue no change is possible. The use of team members’ competences and ideas, the collective team intelligence, requires a (creative) dialogue between team members and between management and team members.

 

The literature on learning organisations points out

 the following five pre-requisites:

HOLISTIC SYSTEM VIEW

Everything is coherent. What an individual does influences the organisation and thus the context and vice versa.

TEAM DEVELOPMENT

Teams are the foundation. They progress towards the highest shared denominator.

SHARED VISION

Visions come from management. Methods exist to incorporate individual ideas into the shared vision.

MODEL FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THINKING 

Using and advancing the dialogue. Feedback. Two-way communication.

PERSONAL MATURITY

Preparedness to review one’s own way of thinking and adapt one’s current ideas and beliefs. Good communication skills. Creator, not victim. At source, not at effect.

At what stage are your plans for developing your organisation into a learning organisation?

Training in techniques for dialogue throughout the organisation is a good start … with the objective of establishing new behaviours, skills and knowledge, and leaving discussion, debate and argument  behind.
