We tend to notice cultural differences when working with people from different cultures or working in a foreign country.  However, we are confronted with cultural differences in everyday life, sometimes making co-operation difficult or impossible. Simple changes in family or work organisation, restructuring, mergers, downsizing, people leaving or joining, all result in the need to merge or split cultures.  This happens in family, group and company cultures.

Even between two different departments or teams in the same organisation, the cultures may be different enough to create difficulties and misunderstandings when working together. The language may be the same but the understanding or interpretation of the language may be different.  Each may have different sets of rules and norms, resulting in territorial thinking.

This is very evident in interface management.

Co-operation across borders is more easily said than done, the result more often being division and conflict than open communication about solutions to our mutual benefit.

Changing attitudes and learning to cope with another’s culture and use of language is not done through one-way communication. Rather we need to create an environment which enables dialogue about both similarities and differences. Only then can we harness the power of multiple cultures and reap the rewards of synergy.
